Howdy all,
I had a pretty good time at Mechacon this year. By the end of the show, I had pressed the shutter release over 600 times. That number is especially high for not covering any events this year, which is a first for me in a long time. Since I’ve received messages asking about this years event photos, I thought I should address my lack of coverage.
Where are your event photos?
For many years, Otakuhigh Photography (Kuragiman) was Mechacon’s official photographer. I had developed a friendship with Kuragiman and assisted him in covering Mechacon’s Red Carpet event. In addition, members of the Burlesque Show had reached out to me to cover their event. With these relationships, I was able to gain early access to the Cosplay contest to cover that event as well. However, this year Kuragiman decided to step away from the convention circuit to focus on studio work and other creative avenues not possible within a convention center. Since my point of contact for the media team was gone, I didn’t have anyone to contact. In addition, no one from the Burlesque Show ask me to cover their event. Basically, no one asked and I didn’t go fishing.
What did you think about the show itself?
I have no clue. I bought a badge and never used it. Its pretty rare that I attend any events or panels for any convention I attend. Its very rare to find any panel topic that I am interested in. As my interest is photography, I am more likely to schedule a photoshoot than attend a panel.
Why didn’t you cover the Cosplay Contest?
Here is the thing about cosplay contests; If I cannot obtain early access for choice seating, I don’t attempt to cover the event. I really don’t want to stand in line for an excess of an hour, just to get a good seat. I value my time and its better spent doing photography, rather than waiting in line.
I did find it interesting, and distressing, that Mechacon is moving to the Hyatt next year. I really loved the Hilton for its location near the mall. I also liked collecting my Hilton Honors points! But, the new location will provide new places to take photos and shake things up a bit. If you never leave your comfort zone, you will never learn anything new.
For those still waiting on photos, I am still processing them. For the unaware, I am selling my house and buying a new one. Its taking up a considerable amount of my time. Hopefully, I will get through the rest of the processing by next weekend.

PS: I am very happy with Sira MorningStar and I were finally able to shoot her Frost cosplay. We’ve been trying to schedule a shoot for three year. Frost has my favorite character from the Mortal Kombat series.
